Elysium Movie Summary
Elysium is set in the year 2154, when Earth is overpopulated, polluted, diseased, and divided into two classes of people: the poor who live on Earth and the rich who live on Elysium, a luxurious space station that has advanced technology and medical facilities. Max (Matt Damon) is a former car thief who works as a factory worker on Earth. He is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation at his workplace and has only five days to live. He decides to join a group of smugglers led by Spider (Wagner Moura) who plan to infiltrate Elysium and use its Med-Bays, machines that can cure any illness or injury. Max agrees to steal data from the brain of John Carlyle (William Fichtner), the CEO of Armadyne, the company that built Elysium, in exchange for a ticket to Elysium.
However, unbeknownst to Max and Spider, Carlyle has a secret program in his brain that can override Elysium's computer system and allow Delacourt (Jodie Foster), the ruthless defense secretary of Elysium, to stage a coup and take over Elysium. Delacourt hires Kruger (Sharlto Copley), a rogue agent on Earth, to recover the data from Max and kill him. Max manages to escape from Kruger with the help of his childhood friend Frey (Alice Braga), who is a nurse and has a daughter named Matilda (Emma Tremblay) who is dying of leukemia.
